  • Watering
Water regularly during the growing season when the soil is dry, but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. In the winter, let the plant dry out. San Pedro cacti are drought-tolerant and can go long periods without water.
  • Soil
Plant in well-drained, slightly acidic soil that includes coarse sand, perlite, and peat moss. San Pedros also like limestone soils and need adequate calcium.
  • Sunlight
Place in full sun, but provide light shade during hot summers. When moving a San Pedro cactus from indoors to outdoors, avoid sudden changes in sunlight exposure so it doesn't sunburn.
  • Temperature
San Pedros do best at room temperature, or around 70°F (21°C), but can survive short periods over 100°F (38°C). They can tolerate a variety of climates, but consistently low temperatures can slow their growth and decrease their chances of survival.
  • Fertilizer
During the growing season, fertilize monthly with a balanced fertilizer.
  • Pests
Mature San Pedros are tolerant of common pests, but seedlings can be susceptible to slugs and snails, which may eat the base or growing tip. Scale and mealybugs are also pests that may affect San Pedros.
  • Containers
Mature San Pedros should be potted in large, spacious containers for optimal growth.
  • Location
Place in an area with good air drainage and avoid low, flat, cold spots. Don't put San Pedros in drafty areas, as they can get windburn, dry out, or get chilled.
